As briefly mentioned in one of my below posts, a fantastic element about the area I have moved to in Sydney; Balmain, is the vast array of gourmet shops right on my doorstep - bakeries, pâtisseries, butchers, organic fresh fruit/veg stores and delicatessens... It is a foodies dream and I am planning to feature articles on these various gourmet havens over the coming weeks.
I am starting off with 'Victoire', a beautiful, authentic Parisian-style bakery which sells the most incredible cakes, breads and cheeses.. Being a savoury-head, this store is my idea of a child's sweetshop. Just throw in a bottle of good red and I'm in heaven...
The feel inside the store is simple in appearance, similar to what one would encounter in a country village in France. Their pastries and cakes are rustic in style and out of all the food shoots I have completed recently, it was utterly impossible to stop myself scoffing down at least one of the five lemon tarts I was shooting. The store provides a good range of Levain breads as well as mouth-watering flavoured sourdough-textured breadsticks - in sun-dried tomato and also olive varieties. I purchased 2 of the former and can attest that the flavour is incredible! One could easily spread a spoonful of fresh pesto and choice of cheese on top, pop it under the grill for 5 minutes and create a quick and easy, mouthwatering savoury lunch.
Beautiful, homely cakes and sweets are displayed in large glass cases in the window, after spending about 40 minutes perusing their selection, I opted to try their Lemon Meringue Pies and Blueberry and Lavender Tartlets... The latter I am currently devouring - a perfect little sweet shortcrust pastry case containing a generous mound of thickened cream which has been infused with lavender and studded with fresh blueberries. If you have never eaten lavender before, it's quite a flavour sensation, very subtle yet wonderfully fragrant and compliments the blueberries well in this cake.
The quality of this boulangerie's breads and cakes is excellent and it is no wonder acclaimed chef; Neil Perry has chosen Victoire to supply bread to all this Rockpool restaurants in Australia.
