So after a wee bit of a delay, and many early Saturday morning/late night friday phone calls from Sydney, Australia to Toronto, Canada*, I am finally delighted to present the all-new and improved What Katie ate site! Yay! * Insert celebratory marching band and lots of happy disco dancers going nuts* here. I took on board all your comments a few months back when looking at the re-design and the most prolific comments were those which said over and over: "Please don't change much, we love it as it is!" ~ but as lovely as it was to hear such feedback, I knew there were a lot features lacking from the old What Katie ate site and one was it was virtually impossible to search and find old recipes! Half the time after all the hours of cooking, styling and shooting, I'd forget to tag the posts so if you were looking for a chocolate cake 6 months later, well, you were pretty much buggered if you were going to find it! Haha! So I am delighted to say the new improved site has a simple, yet great recipe section and everything is now a lot easier to find.
I wanted to keep the look of the blog pretty similar in appearance to the old one ~ aka a white background, clean and simple and non-fussy as WKA is a very photo-centred and I feel this simple style offers a blank canvas in which to feature the shots and which doesn't distract or compete with them.
I want to say an enormous thank you to my incredibly talented; patient; thoughtful; professional; diligent and focused designer ~ Ian. Ian is based in Toronto, Canada* which is a long way from Sydney-ville but as I used to work with Ian back in Dublin in 2004 at a design studio called Dynamo and when I was re-designing the site, I knew there was only one man for the job and that was Ian. Ian has worked on other sites for me (including my own pro. Photography one ~ which is down at mo. but relaunching too in a couple of weeks) and he's a dream to collaborate with. He's been meticulously pottering away on the site for me over the past few months, never once gave out or moaned to me when I was probably driving him utterly mental making changes left, right and centre. It was a big job as virtually every single recipe had to be re-loaded onto the new platform and a lot of other bits had to be put up again from scratch in order to provide the best and most effective result for the new site. But with Ian, his partner Meg, my assistant Madeleine and myself chipping away at it over the last few weeks, we've managed to get it ready to go live. Phew!

Something else you'll notice is my new logo, which I just adore :) When I stumbled across Rob Clarke's work I was stunned I hadn't done so years ago, what with me being so involved in the world of design and branding for yonks. When I told designer friends he was designing my logo they replied with the likes of; "Oh my God, he's incredible, the 'king of logos', you lucky bugger, I've had him bookmarked for years!". Indeed when I saw Rob's incredible wealth of work a few months ago I was bamboozled at how many incredible brand marks he had under his belt and list client list was ridiculously impressive. I thought I'd have Buckley's chance of getting him to work on the new WKA logo, but he came to the party immediately and was an outstanding designer to work with. He took my ideas of board and understood exactly what I wanted, and that was a mark which epitomised all the aspects of WKA (subtly feminine, strong, funky, edgy, commerical, stamp-like, forward-thinking etc) and which I felt were important to be represented in a new, grown-up brand mark. I'm thrilled with the result and look forward to putting it on lots of exciting projects next year! :) End note, if you are looking for a to bloke to work on a logo or brand mark for you, give Rob a call, he's superb.
So let's run through the new look blog and all its new features... first off:
Home Like the old site, this is the main section of WKA where all main and feature posts will be be placed. This is where I'll put up groups of recipes or feature articles. If I do a larger feature say, 4 or 5 recipes based around a specific theme, that post will go in here, but if then the following day I post a quick and easy dinner idea, I'll post that article in Bits and Pieces section. If a post in this home section contains recipes, you'll find a direct link to the recipe underneath each relevant photo - i.e. with this below example click on the 'Raspberry Friands link and you'll be brought to the individual Raspberry Friands recipe in the recipe section.
The extra feature I am thrilled with in particular is the fact I can now respond directly to every single comment if needs be. It was driving me potty before that I could only reply to comments at the end of each block of comments, so wonderfully now I can reply directly.
Recipes The new recipe section is where you'll be able to find all recipes posted on WKA in the past 2 years. You can search my ingredient or title in the search box at the top and also within each individual recipe, all ingredients are categorised depending on what is in each recipe so you can search that way too.
Alos once you click on the big green button entitled "Print Friendly Recipe', you'll get a pop up window containing the recipe all ready to print.
Note: At present 70% of all the recipes in past posts are linked to their individual listings in the new recipe section. There are still some unlinked but we are working our way through them in the coming week or two. By December all recipes will be linking properly.
What Katie Ate Book In this section you will find all info relating to the new What Katie Ate Cookbook, including some links to where you can buy each edition at present. A tip ~ for English and Irish readers as your version of the book is not going on sale until Feb 2013, please note, you can currently purchase the book now from Readings.com.au and they will ship internationally to you (link enclosed in this part of WKA). This section also contains a list of site and blogs which have reviewed the book to given it a mention along with media links and all relevant names and contact details for anything publicity-wise.
I'd be really chuffed if anyone who has the book and enjoys it could, ~ if you have the time, to post up a comment on the What Katie Ate product page on Amazon.com. I have been receiving amazing feedback from so many people by way of emails and messages on how much they like the book but alas, to date few reviews have been penned on Amazon. If you could spare a moment to jot something (preferably positive ;) ;) that would be fantastic! and thanks so much for doing so.
Bits and Pieces This is a brand new section to What Katie ate and is sort of a hodge-podge of articles; quick and easy 'what's for dinner tonight' style recipes; magazine editorials; videos; snippets of news and basically a space where I can post up 'bits and pieces' of info or visuals which I think you'll find of interest. Sort of like the official WKA notice board.
Bits and Bobs A funky little new addition, like the cookbook title, the 'Bits and Bobs' section will be added to on a regular basis and consists of products; books; magazine; companies; organisations; websites; basically anything I have seen online which I think is/are fab and products I personally use myself and find invaluable in the kitchen. i got into cooking really in my 30's and I've made loads of mistakes, I've learnt a lot from these errors and in the process also discovered tools and such which have helped me out and I know find hard not to have in hand in the kitchen. Please note, I am not earning any money from this section or by way of advertising these products, they are just things I think are interesting enough and worthy of a mention. i only feature products in this section which I feel are of use, are good quality and I have personally tested myself.
Gallery Another fun new addition, the Gallery section is sort of a little bit like a showcase of my work separated into categories such as breakfasts, desserts, fruit, meat, fish etc etc. Please note, this section is not linked to recipes, rather it's a section showing off some of my work over the past 2 years both from WKA and commercial clients. Most are not for sale as they belong to clients, but if there is any photo in this section which you are particularly keen on please mail me on email@example.com and I can see if it is available for sale.
Delicious Monthly Since March 2012 I have been a monthly contributor to Australia's ABC Delicious magazine. This is the most popular food magazine in Australia and it has sister publications in Holland and the U.K. Each month I chose a theme and then write, style and shoot approx. 6 recipes to fit the topic in hand. Understandably, Delicious request I refrain from adding too many of the photos or any of the recipes until about 3 or 4 months after each monthly magazine has been on sale, so in this section you'll see recipes available from around August 2012 and before. As each month goes by I will add an extra recipe or two from past editions.
Giveaways The all important section!! This is where you'll find details of past and current giveaways and also the winners of said competitions. To date, (before Octobers big super duper Kitchen Aid mixer prize), each month I have been giving away a different book title, but going forward there may be extra books and items being offered. All info on such can be found in this section.
About WKA and Katie Here in the 'About me' so-to-speak section I've listed info on my work as a photographer and also any info relating to What Katie Ate. I'm also adding a few Q&As which I think may be useful in answering any questions which a lot of readers may have - aka 'Do I take on assistants', what equipment do I use etc.
